- Background brief
Since 1999, International Men’s Day (IMD) has been celebrated globally on November 19. It is an opportunity to celebrate men and highlight the positive value they bring to the world, their families and communities.
Though there have been initiatives to celebrate men over the years, the International Men’s Day on the 19 November was revitalised and founded in 1999 by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad Tabago.
Jerome Teelucksingh has over the years promoted International Men's Day as not just a gendered day, but a day where all issues affecting men can be addressed.
Commemorated in about 80 countries, the six key pillars of International Men’s Dayare set out below.(1) To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men buteveryday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.
(2) To celebrate men’spositive contributions; to society, community, family, marriage, childcare, and to the environment
(3) To focus on men’s healthand wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.
(4) To highlight discrimination against males; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.
(5) To improve gender relations andpromote gender equality.
(6) To create a safer, better world;where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.
According to https://internationalmensday.com/, since 1999, the methods of commemorating International Men’s Day have included the giving and receiving of gifts, public seminars, forums, conferences, classroom activities at schools, Men’s Health events, radio and television programs, Parliamentary speeches, Government Observances, Church observances, prayer meetings, peaceful gatherings and marches, awards ceremonies, special retail promotions, music concerts and art displays, etc.In Nigeria, Sanmi Falobi, IMD International and West Africa Ambassador is leading a team of volunteers and enthusiasts in coordinating cluster of activities, and promoting awareness to commemorate IMD in Nigeria. Celebrating International Men’s Day 2024: The Power of Positive Role Models
Today, being International Men’s Day, we recognize all the great men of Mixta. It’s a time to appreciate men of positive impact and remember the value of well-being. This year’s theme, “Positive Male Role Models,” invites us to consider the ordinary heroes that surround us and reflect on what each one of us can do to become that role model for people in our lives.
Why Positive Role Models Are Important?
Now, reflect on the men who have influenced you: a father, brother, friend, coach, or colleague. These are those who show up, even when it’s hard. They lead with kindness; demonstrate integrity; and inspire confidence in others. It is not about grand gestures or public recognition; true role models are defined by small consistent actions that build trust, strength, and a sense of community.

Emotional well-being and International Men’s Day
Baba Goni is a 42-year-old bank manager who has always provided responsibly for his family. He is proud to take care of his parents, younger siblings, his wife, and three children. The younger children are in a good boarding school, while the eldest is already in a private university. His wife is a pharmacist and she runs a successful pharmacy. He sometimes had a sneaky suspicion that she may actually be making more money than him, but it was not a problem as it was his responsibility to cater to the family and he is comfortably able to do so; until things started going south. The economic recession hit his bank hard and the bank retrenched more than half of the non-essential staff, while management staff like himself were placed on half salary. This situation has persisted for 10 months now. Unfortunately for him, he had just taken a loan facility two months earlier to complete his duplex on Lagos Road, GRA. After all, all his friends and family had been harassing him that he was still living in a rented apartment.

November 19th marks International Men’s Day (IMD), a global celebration honouring the positive value men bring to the world, their families, and communities. Founded in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, IMD serves as an opportunity to address issues affecting men and boys.
As Nigerians join in the commemoration of the International Men’s Day (IMD), the Coordinator of the International Men’s Day Nigeria, Sanmi Falobi has said recognising the contributions of men in making the society better, was for the good of all.
According to Falobi, the observance of November 19 as International Men’s Day across over 90 countries is an opportunity to celebrate men and their contributions to the workplace, their families and society, hence, it is instructive that Nigeria cannot be left behind in commemorating IMD.
He said, “The significance of drawing awareness and galvanising stakeholders (government, private sector, organisations, families, and individuals) in Nigeria to have a cluster of events and initiatives to commemorate the IMD 2024 with the theme, ‘Positive Male Role Models’ is the opportunity to promote values, character and responsibilities associated with being a man, and sharing perspectives and passing across ideals to enhance and celebrate the contribution of men to their families, workplace, society and national life.”
Sanmi Falobi, Coordinator of the International Men’s Day (IMD) Nigeria, has said Nigerians must celebrate the contributions of men in making society a better place for the good of all.
IMD Ambassador emphasises need to eulogise positive male role models
There is a need to recognise and eulogise men who are role models for the contribution they make to society for the greater good of all, Sanmi Falobi, International Men’s Day Ambassador for West Africa, has said.
Falobi, in a statement released in commemoration of International Men’s Day, which is held every November 19 across over 90 countries stated that the day presents an opportunity to celebrate men and their contributions to the workplace, their families and society. And Nigeria can not be left behind.

In the statement ahead of the IMD which is celebrated every year on Nov. 19, Falobi said:”though men are generally perceived to be strong-hearted and socialised to project strength, autonomy, dominance and stoicism, there are many men dying silently and crying inwardly due to the enormous burden placed on them by family obligations and career expectations.
